Wild Harvested & Foraging by the Seasons

Guided by the Seasons. Dictated by the Earth.

At Bumble & Birdie, our "lab" has no walls. It is the forest floor, the coastal ridgeline, and the hidden gullies of our landscape. You can smell the difference in the air before we even begin—the crispness of morning frost on Kānuka, or the heavy, honeyed heat of a Mānuka noon. As a processor, I don’t just "source" ingredients; I wait for the moment the plant’s volatile compounds and vitality are at their absolute peak.

The Ethics of the Harvest

Wild harvesting is a sacred contract. We practice a philosophy of "reverent gathering"—guided by the principles of Kaitiakitanga and Tikanga. In my workshop, we never strip a plant bare. We take only the "surplus," ensuring the mauri (life force) of the parent plant remains vibrant. This is a commitment to leave the forest stronger than we found it.

Sovereign Sourcing & Collection Sites

We believe that we are only as strong as the whānau we stand with. To ensure the highest integrity of our ingredients, we partner with Māori-owned trusts and artisanal growers who are the true kaitiaki of their whenua.

Waitahanui Apiaries: From the volcanic heart of the Central Plateau, we source raw honey and waxes. Their commitment to "Wild Perfection" ensures our bee-derived ingredients carry the soul of the untouched native bush.

Opepe Farm Fresh Milk (Opepe Farm Trust): Our milk-based rituals are enriched by the Opepe Farm Trust, a leader in sustainable, carbon-zero farming. Their philosophy supports the mana and wellbeing of the lands and people of the Taupō hikuwai.

Lavender: Gathered from [Taupō']. We harvest the flowering tops when the essential oil yield is most concentrated, ensuring a deep, true aromatic profile.

Kawakawa: Foraged from [Whanganui]. We select the "spiritually-bitten" leaves—those chosen by the looper moth—which triggers the plant to produce higher medicinal compounds.

Kanuka & Manuka

Our Seasonal Fruit & Botanical Sites: We frequent [Bay of Plenty & Hawkes Bay] for our seasonal infusions, selecting sun-ripened fruits that carry the sugar and soul of the season.

Permissions & Tikanga: When we forage beyond our own boundaries, we move with permission and in alignment with local Kaitiaki. This ensures our presence in the bush is respectful, lawful, and spiritually sound.

A Balanced Kete

  • While we take great pride in our hand-foraged ingredients, we also recognize the expertise of our community. Our rituals are a thoughtful blend of:

  • Wild-Harvested Flora: Gathered by us, by hand, according to the Maramataka (Māori Lunar Calendar).

  • Sovereign Sourced Ingredients: Premium honey, milk, and waxes sourced from our Māori-owned Trust partners.

  • Pure Artisanal Bases: High-quality, sustainable oils and butters that provide the clean canvas for our wild botanicals.

Our Commitment to Standards

  • We believe in transparency. While we are an artisan workshop, we hold ourselves to global benchmarks to ensure your skin and our earth are protected.

  • B Corp Framework: we are currently auditing our internal processes against the B Corp standards, prioritizing people and planet over profit as we grow.

  • Wild Harvest Standards: We strictly follow the principles of the BioGro Wild & Natural frameworks. This ensures our foraging is traceable, spray-free, and respectful of ecosystem recovery cycles.

  • NATRUE Guidelines: We strictly adhere to NATRUE’s definitions for natural compositions—ensuring 100% natural ingredients with no synthetic shortcuts.

From Forest to Flame

Every botanical we touch is processed within hours of harvest to lock in its "living" energy. When you light a Bumble & Birdie candle or apply our oils, you are experiencing the true, unadulterated spirit of a specific time and place.

The Rhythm of the Year

Because we forage through the seasons, our offerings are a living map of the year. Our batches are small, and when a season’s harvest is gone, it is gone until the earth turns again.

Kōanga (Spring): The season of awakening. We gather the bright, honey-scented Mānuka blooms and the delicate, fleeting Elderflower.

Raumati (Summer): The height of the sun. We harvest the resinous wild herbs and lavender when their essential oils are at their most concentrated.

Ngahuru (Autumn): The time of grounding. We look to the deep resins, the barks, and the late-blooming natives as the sap begins its descent.

Hōtoke (Winter): The quiet distillation. We work with the enduring roots and the hardy evergreens, focusing on the deep, woody notes that anchor our winter rituals.
