Botanical Hydrosol Benefits for Skin

Botanical Hydrosol Benefits for Skin - Bumble & Birdie NZ

Botanical Hydrosols, also known as floral waters or plant waters, have various benefits for the skin due to their gentle nature and therapeutic properties. Here are some of the benefits of using hydrosols for the skin:

1. Hydration: Hydrosols are hydrating and can help moisturize the skin without clogging pores. They provide a light and refreshing layer of moisture that is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive and oily skin.

2. Soothing and calming: Hydrosols have soothing and calming properties that can help reduce redness, irritation, and inflammation on the skin. They are particularly beneficial for sensitive and reactive skin types.

3. Balancing: Hydrosols can help balance the skin's pH levels and regulate oil production. They can be used to tone and tighten the skin, leaving it looking fresh and revitalized.

4. Antioxidant protection: Many hydrosols are rich in antioxidants, which can help protect the skin from environmental damage and free radicals. Antioxidants can also help fight signs of aging and promote a youthful complexion.

5. Anti-inflammatory properties: Hydrosols can help reduce inflammation and calm skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and rosacea. They can help soothe itchiness and discomfort, promoting overall skin health.

6. Aromatherapy benefits: In addition to their skincare benefits, hydrosols offer aromatherapy benefits due to their natural and subtle aroma. They can help uplift the mood, reduce stress, and create a calming atmosphere.

7. Versatility: Hydrosols can be used in various ways on the skin, such as toning, refreshing, misting, or adding to skincare products like serums or lotions. They are gentle enough to be used daily and can be incorporated into a skincare routine for added benefits.

When choosing a hydrosol for skincare, it is essential to select high-quality, pure products that are free from additives and synthetic ingredients. Look for organic or wildcrafted hydrosols made from fresh plant material, as they will provide the most benefits for the skin. Consider experimenting with different hydrosols to find the one that works best for your skin type and concerns.

We use the steam distillation process to produce our four facial mists, Lush Flora Herbed & Be Cool

Below we look at our process to produce Lavender hydrosol which we use to formulate our Flora Facial Mist.

Lavender hydrosol, also known as lavender floral water or lavender water, is a byproduct of the steam distillation process used to extract lavender essential oil. Hydrosols are the aromatic waters that remain after essential oils are distilled from botanical materials.

1. Harvesting: Lavender plants are harvested when they are at their peak bloom, usually in the early morning when essential oil content is highest.
2. Distillation: The lavender flowers and plant material are placed in a distillation still along with water. The still is then heated, causing the water to turn into steam and pass through the plant material.
3. Condensation: As the steam rises through the plant material, it carries tiny molecules of the plant's essential oils and other water-soluble compounds with it. The steam is then cooled in a condenser, where it returns to a liquid state.
4. Separation: The liquid collected during distillation consists of two parts - the essential oil (which floats on top) and the aromatic water (which is the hydrosol, or distillate, that remains after the oil is removed). The essential oil is typically skimmed off the top, leaving the hydrosol behind.
5. Filtering: The lavender hydrosol is then filtered to remove any remaining plant particles or impurities, resulting in a clear, fragrant floral water.
6. Bottling and storage: The filtered lavender hydrosol is bottled and stored in airtight, light-protected containers to preserve its freshness and potency. It is essential to store hydrosols in a cool, dark place to prevent oxidation and degradation.
Lavender hydrosol retains many of the same therapeutic benefits and aromatic properties as lavender essential oil but in a much gentler and diluted form. It can be used for skincare, aromatherapy, and as a natural fragrant mist for the home. When choosing a lavender hydrosol, look for products that are made from high-quality, organic lavender plants and do not contain any additives or synthetic ingredients.
